Daniel Carlat, MD is Chief of Psychiatry at MelroseWakefield Health Care, where he is medical director of three psychiatric inpatient units comprising 56 adult and geriatric psychiatry beds. He is the founder and president of Carlat Publishing, LLC, and oversees the publication of a variety of CME newsletters (such as The Carlat Psychiatry Report), books, and websites. He is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts School of Medicine. From 2012-2014, he was director of the Prescription Project in Washington DC, where he oversaw The Pew Charitable Trusts’ initiatives on medical conflicts of interest. He has written extensively on topics in both psychiatric treatment and industry/physician relationships, including the 2007 article “Dr. Drug Rep,” which appeared in the New York Times Magazine and was included in the anthology Best American Science Writing of 2008. His book Unhinged, published in 2010, decried modern psychiatric practice, and argued that clinicians should be trained to combine therapy with medications.
